Research & Development

TiNi Aerospace offers its research and development expertise and facilities on a contractual basis for development of new or modified Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) products and applications. We find that our extensive experience working with this unique material helps us to quickly evaluate various concepts, suggest time saving solutions, and help lead the way into production. Depending on the application, an SMA actuator may offer the following benefits:

Engineering is at the heart of what we do best at TiNi Aerospace. Even though we have developed an increasing number of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) products, we are continually asked to design and develop new actuator configurations based on our core SMA technology. All projects are staffed with Senior Engineers with many years of experience designing and developing quality products for Space, Sea, and Defense applications. The design process includes strict controls of all Parts, Materials, and Processes (PMP) used and relies heavily on Testing as the primary means to verify or validate a design. Additionally, the development of all new or modified products goes through a rigorous review cycle including the following key milestones:

  • PDR: Preliminary Design Review
  • CDR: Critical Design Review
  • MRR: Manufacturing Readiness Review
  • TRR: Test Readiness Review
  • PSR: Pre Ship Review


TiNi products are manufactured with the utmost regard to quality assurance and with a commitment to maintaining the highest workmanship standard possible. To ensure this, all parts manufactured or procured are subject to inspection to ensure that they meet stringent requirements. Parts which are considered EEE (Electrical, Electronic, or Electromechanical) are further screened to a higher level, as are all items requiring “Special Processes” such as welding, soldering, or plating. Skilled technicians take extreme care in manufacturing our products and their work is controlled through detailed instructions, which serve to control and verify all aspects of the build, from raw materials to finished goods. Manufacturing controls include:

  • Procurement: Integrity of the “supply chain” is ensured by purchasing parts and services from certified vendors only
  • Machining: Performed on state of the art CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machines
  • Inspection: Aided by the extensive use of a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) and a VMM (Video Measuring Machine)
  • Assembly: Completed by trained and certified technicians in a FOD (Foreign Object Debris) controlled environment
  • Testing: Performed extensively on 100% of hardware manufactured (see Testing)


A significant amount of testing goes into the development, qualification, and acceptance of each new TiNi product. These are summarized below:

  • Development: The development effort encompasses the massive trial and error period, which ultimately results in the final product. As an example, the Pinpuller and Frangibolt product lines were originally developed over a 3+ year program for NASA and NRL (Naval Research Lab), respectively.
  • Qualification: Qualification tests are performed on each new product and/or when the requirements of a new application adds to, or exceeds, the levels of a product already qualified. Qualification tests typically include a host of functional tests under worst case environmental conditions including thermal vacuum, shock, and vibration.
  • Acceptance: TiNi Aerospace performs acceptance tests on 100% of all products manufactured as a final screening technique against workmanship related problems. This is key to consistently delivering products that meet the aerospace industry’s high demand for performance and reliability.

TiNi Aerospace, Inc. has been an AS9100 and ISO9001 certified company since 2004. We are committed to continually improving our Quality Management System (QMS) in order to provide products and services that meet or exceed customer requirements. Essential to this system are the following elements:

TiNi Aerospace is an international company — we routinely ship our hardware to U.S. ally countries around the world. Trained and dedicated administrative staff file for and receive the necessary export license from the U.S. Department of State and/or Commerce Department. This process has become quite “user friendly” in recent years and is often completed in as little as 3 weeks after receipt of contract. TiNi Aerospace also has partner companies in Italy and Japan who can provide both technical support and sales function in real time. Export regions and countries include:
